London isn’t any stranger to supercars – and even ultra-rare hypercars. A leisurely stroll via the town’s hotspots can typically be more thrilling than a whole auto present.
So, after I deliberated a visit to England’s capital city, I anticipated nothing less than what Theon Design had in store for the day.
Air-cooled Porsches are experiencing a renaissance. Restomods have become so widespread that it’s simple to reel overwhelmed but making a standout piece requires talent and dedication. Theon Design is rising to the challenge, aiming to construct the llast-wordair-cooled Porsche 911s.
Based mainly in Oxfordshire, this passionate workforce specializes in the 964 (1989 to 1994) era of the Porsche 911. Since 2016, Theon has created bespoke automobiles, customizing each element to suit the proprietor’s preferences. This dedication was evident within the two distinctive creations they introduced into London.
I found myself standing throughout the Cartier showroom on Previous Bond Avenue when Theon Design co-owner Adam Thawley and his colleague Thomas arrived. The two 964s they had been driving—one a Sign Yellow 964 Targa and the other a Midnight Blue Coupé —regarded like they’d simply rolled off the manufacturing unit floor.
Parked together, the Theon 964s brought the busy road to a halt. For a metropolis recognized for its supercars, it was shocking to see so much attention focused on two older Porsches.
We regularly categorize folks as ‘petrolheads’ or ‘non-petrolheads,’ but that seems like an oversimplification. Everybody turns into an automobile fanatic when the automobile is compelling enough. I had a couple of minutes to soak in the environment and snap some pictures before Adam and Thomas were ready to move on to the next stops of their London tour.
Thomas kindly provided me the passenger seat in the Targa, and I seized the chance.
Sliding into the automobile, I was met with a sudden delight: the inside was trendy and retro at the same time. I shortly appreciated the absence of screens and haptic buttons. As a substitute, the controls had been delightfully old-school – knobs for the heating and pullout switches for the headlights and, most crucially, the exhaust valves. The automobile’s character was reworked when these valves opened and closed.
We drove via Park Lane and before the Dorchester Resort, where a crowd was admiring a Koenigsegg Regera. As if on cue, they all turned their heads like meerkats on alert. The sound of two flat-six engines was sufficient to redirect their consideration from the hypercar to Theon’s classic Porsches.
Our ultimate stop was a quintessential London mews. After we parked, I had the opportunity to speak with Adam, who founded Theon Design with his wife, Lucinda Argy.
As talked about, Theon’s rebuilt 911s are primarily based on the 964 eras. However, the stage of customization is the place they shine. In keeping with Adam, when you gathered 5 of their commissioned automobile and their house owners in a single location, you’d immediately recognize the distinctive match between every automobile and its driver.
Frequent options of Theon Design builds embrace lightweight carbon fiber panels throughout, apart from the doorways, which retain a stable, unique feel. A carbon tub provides chassis rigidity, which is especially useful for 964 Targas, as they have been recognized to flex more than the 964 Coupé.
These modifications contribute to a significant weight discount – around 300kg (661lbse. A Coupé weighs around 1,100kg (2,425lbs), whereas the Targa is available at about 1,200kg (2,645lbs). Regardless of the burden loss, it’s not all about compromise; interiors are often upholstered with roughly 10 kilograms (220lb) of leather-based!
The engine choices vary from a 3.6-liter producing 285hp to a 3.8-liter with 370hp and a 4.0-liter that churns out 400hp. Supercharged and turbocharged choices are available. These engines are paired with a Porsche Getrag G50 5-speed handbook and an HSC-200 6-speed gearbox, sending energy to the rear wheels. My clean journey within the Targa was because of the TracTive ACE (Lively Managed Electronics) absolutely adjustable suspension, which was arranged appropriately for touring.
The beginning costs for Theon’s bespoke 964s are £410,000 (roughly US$516,000) for the Coupé and £430,000 (US$541,000) for the Targa.
The Targa, codenamed GBR-05 because it was the fifth automobile delivered to the UK, was commissioned by a returning shopper who already owned a Coupé. Constructed to touring specs, the automobile prioritizes consolation and baggage capability for lengthy journeys. In distinction, the Coupé, codenamed USA-01 as the primary American supply, is geared extra towards sports activities efficiency. Its proprietor, a racing driver, requested a mode swap with choices for metropolis driving, observe use, and two distinct sports activity settings. With their customized options, these bespoke builds are available at around £600,000 (US$755,000) every year.
The automotive world has been inundated with restaurants, and it’s not arduous to see why. Fashionable automobiles usually fail to captivate fanatics, driving them in the direction of older cars. Restomods bridge this hole, providing the reliability and luxury of the latest automobiles while preserving the timeless appeal of classics. Whereas not all restaurants are created equal, what Theon Design is constructing is arguably among the absolute best.
I shot a video with these two particular 964s during my time in London, and you can test that out by hitting the play button above.
