BMW Emerges as the Top-Selling German Luxury Car in Australia

BMW Australia Achieves Record Sales in 2023, Leading German Luxury Car Market

BMW Australia has reported a remarkable increase in vehicle sales for the year 2023, surpassing the previous year’s figures by 15.4 percent to achieve a total of 26,184 units sold.

This significant growth has propelled BMW to the position of Australia’s top-selling German luxury car brand, capturing a 2.0 percent market share. This achievement places BMW ahead of its closest competitors, Audi (with 19,039 units sold and a 1.6 percent market share) and Mercedes-Benz (with 24,315 units sold and a 2.0 percent market share).

Marking the first time in 11 years that BMW has outperformed its German rivals, this success coincides with an all-time sales record for its Mini sub-brand, which saw a 42.9 percent increase with 4,289 units sold. Additionally, BMW experienced strong sales of battery electric vehicles, totaling 2,990 units and representing a staggering 131.0 percent increase.

The growth of the BMW brand can be attributed to the introduction of 11 new vehicle models throughout the year. The BMW X1 emerged as the top-selling model, with 4,644 units sold, followed by the BMW X3 (4,002 units) and the BMW X5 (3,682 units). SUV models, collectively known as the BMW X lineup, accounted for 61.6 percent of BMW’s total sales.

The BMW 3 Series and BMW 1 Series also made significant contributions to the overall sales tally, with 3,147 and 1,755 units sold respectively.

Wolfgang Buechel, CEO of BMW Group Australia, credited the brand’s success to its network of 49 local dealerships, as well as the dedication of BMW Australia staff and loyal customers. He emphasized the brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, highlighting the growing popularity of electrified models across both the BMW and Mini ranges.

Looking ahead, Buechel expressed confidence in BMW Group Australia’s continued success and innovation, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience and driving the automotive industry forward.
