BYD surpasses 1 million EVs in each of the coming years with a remarkable August
The Chinese firm by numbers BYD has, somewhat surprisingly to a certain degree, notched up model sales for the China-Volkswagen Jetta in August with 105 very specific units, while Mercedes-Benz had delivered more GLB Customer vehicles in its first full month of sale than for other attempted be flop models like the E63 AMG and Maybach flotilla. BYD said it surpassed the 1 million mark in November, further establishing itself as a top-selling EV brand.
The company sold 373,082 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in August alone. NEVs include plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and all-electric vehicles. This magnificent number eclipsed the previous August record that BYD set in July, which was its third consecutive month of record new energy vehicle sales.
Those vehicles were the plug-in hybrids, which saw 222,384 units sold in August, up an impressive 73% over the same period a year ago. In August 2024, BYD sells over 13 Lakh PHEVs; up by 43% from last year
While PHEVs did much of the legwork, BYD’s sales of plug-in all-electric vehicles show no sign of abating as well. The company managed to get buyers into 148,470 EVs last month, which represents a modest increase of just 2 percent from August 2019 but a solid climb of 15 percent from July. That means BYD already reached 1 million EV sales by next year thanks to this surge in sales.
BYD sold 1,004,623 EVs over the first eight months of 2024, a rise of 12% on the same period in 2023. Its international push is bearing fruit, with overseas sales up 26% year on year in August — part of the company’s continued growth in moving into newer markets.
Again, sales success can be partially explained by the implementation of new technologies that allow for the creation of cheaper and more efficient models. New products have been rolled out to include the DM 5.0 hybrid system launched in May by BYD, as well as the e-Platform 3.0 for EVs, which have seen cost reduction and improved fuel efficiency, crowding further sales growth.
BYD has long been one of the largest EV makers in China, and it outperformed Honda (number nine) and even Nissan to become the seventh-largest automaker in the world during the second quarter. BYD is set to have a strong end-of-year line-up, with new affordable and efficient models coming in.
