Reviews of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4Xe | Overview

Overview

Our recent test drive of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with a short wheelbase (seating five) exceeded expectations, showcasing impressive performance both on and off the road despite its modest petrol V6 engine. This positive experience has raised our anticipation for the top-tier Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe PHEV, marking Jeep’s first electrified “true” 4WD.

Priced from $129,950 excluding on-road costs, the Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe competes directly with capable 4WDs like the Land Rover Defender 110 P400e HSE and the Range Rover Velar HSE PHEV, positioning itself as a premium option among soft-road SUVs.

Externally, the 4xe resembles other Grand Cherokee models, with subtle enhancements including gloss black roof accents and unique window moldings. The interior boasts a range of luxurious features, from premium LED lighting to a McIntosh 19-speaker audio system, ensuring a comfortable and connected driving experience.

Under the hood, the 4xe combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol engine with two electric traction motors, delivering a combined output of up to 280kW and 637Nm of torque. This impressive powertrain is complemented by top-of-the-line Quadra Trac II all-wheel drive and Quadra-Lift air suspension, ensuring exceptional off-road performance.

While Jeep claims a combined average fuel consumption of 3.2L/100km, our tests revealed a higher figure in mixed driving conditions. However, the 4xe’s hybrid powertrain and regenerative braking system contribute to its efficiency, with a claimed electric-only range of 52km.

On the road, the 4xe delivers surprising acceleration and a smooth driving experience, thanks to its Torque Flite eight-speed automatic transmission. The air suspension provides excellent ride quality, both on and off-road, while the Quadra-Trac II 4WD system ensures optimal traction in various conditions.

Inside, the 4xe offers a Range Rover-inspired ambiance, with premium materials and advanced technology enhancing comfort and convenience. However, some driver-assist features may be overly intrusive and require adjustment.

Overall, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV presents a compelling option in the premium SUV segment, offering a blend of performance, efficiency, and luxury. While it may face stiff competition from other premium brands, its distinctive design and impressive capabilities make it a worthy contender.
