BMW, Tata join forces on software development

The BMW Group and Tata Technologies, a global company specializing in product engineering and digital services, have announced a partnership to establish joint software and IT development hubs in Bangalore, Chennai, and Pune, India.

The main focus of development and operations activities will be in Bangalore and Pune, with Chennai concentrating on IT business solutions. The formation of the joint venture is subject to review and approval by the relevant authorities.

The partnership aims to embody the principle of ‘Engineer in India for the World’ and will utilize Tata Technologies’ expertise in digital engineering and talent pool to enhance the BMW Group’s software coding capabilities across global IT hubs and ensure 24/7 operations.

The joint venture will prioritize strategic software development, including solutions for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). In automotive software, the focus will be on automated driving, infotainment, and digital services, while in business IT, the emphasis will be on digitalization and automation of product development, production, and sales processes.

Upon establishment, the joint venture will include 100 trained and experienced Tata Technologies professionals, with plans for rapid expansion to a four-digit staffing number in the coming years.

Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President of Software and Electronic Engineering Architecture at BMW Group, highlighted the collaboration’s significance in advancing software-defined vehicles and leveraging India’s pool of talented software engineers.

Alexander Buresch, BMW Group CIO and Senior Vice President expressed his satisfaction with expanding the company’s international development operation hubs through the partnership with Tata Technologies.

Warren Harris, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Technologies emphasized the commitment to delivering high-quality solutions in automotive software and digital engineering, contributing to BMW Group’s digital transformation journey.

Nachikey Paranjpe, President of Automotive Sales at Tata Technologies, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of leveraging domain knowledge and expertise to engineer technologically advanced vehicles and deliver exceptional consumer experiences globally.
