Reviewing the Toyota Corolla Hybrid provides a comprehensive overview of this popular vehicle.

Overview

Some time ago, Toyota introduced its updated MY23 Corolla hatch and sedan range in Australia, featuring a starting price of $28,130 plus on-road costs. The range boasted several upgrades, including the integration of Toyota Connected Services functionality, an upgraded multimedia system, and the latest fifth-generation petrol-electric powertrain.

However, the manual gearbox option was quietly removed, and prices increased by $2425 to $3785 depending on the variant. This made it $4235 more expensive to purchase a new Corolla Ascent Sport, as all variants now come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as standard.

One significant update was the introduction of a new hybrid drivetrain, pairing a 1.8-liter petrol engine with a high-output motor/generator and a lighter lithium-ion battery pack. This hybrid setup increased the peak power output by 13kW, providing a maximum combined output of 103kW.

In addition to the hybrid powertrain, the Corolla range now offers Toyota Connected Services technology, allowing owners to remotely access information such as fuel level, lock/unlock status, and vehicle location. The safety suite has also been expanded, incorporating features like motorcycle detection, intersection collision avoidance support, and emergency steering assist.

From an infotainment perspective, all variants now feature Toyota’s latest generation multimedia system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB+ digital radio reception, and a USB-C port. Various grade-specific enhancements have been made, including a 7.0-inch multi-information display (MID) for the Ascent Sport hatch and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel for ZR variants.

Externally, the Ascent Sport and SX grades receive new 16-inch wheels and a refreshed grille design. Optional packages, such as the Convenience Park package, have been introduced to enhance safety features like rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.

On the road, the Corolla SX Hybrid impresses with its unassuming yet competent performance, efficient fuel consumption, and comfortable ride quality. The hybrid powertrain delivers adequate power without compromising on mileage, making it suitable for city commuting and highway cruising alike.

With its user-friendly infotainment system, reliable reputation, and competitive pricing, the Corolla SX Hybrid remains a compelling choice in the small-segment car market. Despite its simplicity and lack of excitement compared to rivals, its overall value and efficiency make it a practical and sensible option for buyers.
