Reviews of the Ford F-150 Lightning

AUSEV generously provided GoAuto with the opportunity to test drive a right-hand drive Ford F-150 Lightning XLT around Brisbane, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the future of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in Australia. This marks the arrival of the only right-hand drive electric 4×4 ute currently available Down Under.

Although Ford Australia has introduced the popular F-150 to the market, the all-electric Lightning model has yet to make an appearance at local dealerships. However, this gap has been bridged by Australian-owned distributor AUSEV, which specializes in importing and remanufacturing both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles.

The F-150 Lightning XLT model provided by AUSEV, equipped with Method Race wheels and Maxxis RAZR off-road tires, exemplifies the company’s commitment to testing and validation for the local market. Despite the rigorous right-hand drive conversion, the Lightning retains all the safety features and functionalities of the North American model.

Powered by dual electric motors delivering permanent four-wheel drive, the F-150 Lightning boasts impressive performance figures. The long-range variant, equipped with a 131kWh battery, offers a claimed driving range of up to 510km, while the standard-range variant, with a 98kWh battery, achieves a range of 370km.

During the test drive, the Lightning was impressed with its remarkable acceleration, spacious cabin, and comfortable ride. Despite its hefty weight, the Lightning’s performance outshines that of the Ford Ranger Raptor, making it a standout choice for urban driving.

With its sizable cargo bed, generous cabin space, and impressive payload capacity, the Lightning proves to be a versatile workhorse. Furthermore, its coil-sprung suspension ensures a smooth and compliant ride, even when loaded.

While the brief test drive did not allow for a comprehensive assessment of range or performance under different conditions, the Lightning’s capabilities are promising. Its seamless right-hand drive conversion, combined with its intuitive handling and impressive power delivery, make it a compelling option for fleet, commercial, and private buyers seeking a sustainable alternative to traditional petrol vehicles.
