Reviews of the BMW 5 Series 2024

Overview

BMW has made a bold move with the launch of the all-new G60-generation 5 Series in Australia. The Bavarian automaker is betting big on electric vehicles (EVs), with two-thirds of the range consisting of fully electric i5 variants at launch. The entry-level 520i stands as the sole representative of the combustion club for now, marking a departure from the V8 powertrain configuration that was popular in the previous G30 generation.

Prices have also seen an increase. While the previous-generation G30 5 Series started at $107,700 plus ORC, the 2024 G60 520i now starts at $114,900 plus on-roads. In the middle of the range, the i5 eDrive40 comes in at $155,900, while the top-tier i5 M60 xDrive commands a hefty $215,900. This shift towards electrification comes with a substantial cost, especially considering the previous generation’s pricing.

However, progress often comes at a price. With the G60, BMW has positioned its large sedan further towards the opulent 7 Series, indicating a faster technological trickle-down from the top end. The interior of the new 5 Series showcases this advancement, featuring twin widescreens, capacitive touch controls, and a color-shifting ambient light bar. Even the base 520i boasts an extensive list of standard features, including a panoramic glass sunroof, carbon-fiber interior trim, and a Harman Kardon stereo system.

The all-electric i5 variants offer additional specifications, such as a premium Bowers and Wilkins audio system and Merino leather upholstery. However, the main draw of the i5 models lies in their electric powertrains, which include an 84kWh battery, adaptive suspension, and advanced driver assistance features.

The new platform also brings changes in dimensions, with increased overall length, width, height, and wheelbase. Both i5 models feature the same 84kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering impressive single-charge ranges.

On the road, the i5 eDrive40 delivers a refined and comfortable ride, while the performance-oriented M60 xDrive impresses with its power and agility despite its weight. The 520i, powered by a mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine, offers adequate performance for daily driving but lacks the sophistication of its electric counterparts in terms of suspension.

Overall, BMW’s decision to prioritize EVs in the new 5 Series lineup shows promise, with the i5 variants poised to compete with other electric luxury sedans. However, the 520i could benefit from improved suspension to better align with its premium features. As the G60 story unfolds, there may be more surprises in store, including the potential return of a high-performance combustion model.
