Hyundai i30 Sedan N: More than Just a Facelift

The updated Hyundai i30 Sedan N isn’t just about cosmetic changes; it’s undergone significant enhancements that might raise some eyebrows.

Beyond the new red stripes and refreshed front and rear designs, you’ll find a reworked suspension damper tune, updated steering components, new chassis parts, a stiffer frame, additional brake hose insulation for fade resistance, revamped stability control tuning, and even redesigned engine mounts to reduce axle-tramp from a standstill.

Enthusiasts will appreciate these changes, but for everyday drivers, there are spec adjustments that enhance the value proposition. Despite a $1800 price hike to $52,000 +ORCs, the new model offers both a six-speed manual and eight-speed dual-clutch auto, with premium paint ($595) and a sunroof ($2000) as the only options.

The i30 Sedan N retains the familiar 2.0-liter turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, delivering 206kW (at 6000rpm) and 392Nm (at 2100-4700rpm). It boasts multiple N driving modes, including customizable settings for steering, suspension, and powertrain response, along with N Grin Shift auto rev-matching.

Despite slight increases in fuel consumption (8.5L/100km for the manual, 8.3L/100km for the auto), the i30 Sedan N maintains its spirited performance. The car comes with a five-year/unlimited kilometer warranty and lifetime capped-price servicing, including lifetime roadside assistance.

Compared to the standard sedan, the i30 Sedan N offers a larger size and boot capacity (4710mm length, 2720mm wheelbase, 474-liter boot), though the load-through capability is compromised by a stiffening bar behind the rear seats.

Inside, the N models boast leather-appointed trim, sports front seats, a black N badge on the steering wheel, red stitching, and N-mode buttons. The cabin features twin 10.25-inch displays with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in satnav, and an eight-speaker Bose sound system.

The driving experience remains exhilarating yet refined, with improved suspension and steering making it more enjoyable in urban settings while retaining its dynamic prowess on demanding roads. The engine delivers strong performance, especially in N mode, accompanied by an exhilarating soundtrack.

Whether equipped with the six-speed manual or eight-speed dual-clutch auto, the i30 Sedan N offers a thrilling driving experience and remains a compelling option in its segment, competing with rivals like the Subaru WRX, Civic Type R, and VW Golf R at a more affordable price point.
